Northcott Neighborhood House

Northcott Neighborhood House

Description

Northcott's mission is to support family stability, provide educational and recreational programs for youth, lessen neighborhood tensions, combat community deterioration, and provide various social services for the residents of Harambee and surrounding neighborhoods.

Northcott Neighborhood House, Inc. is a multi-purpose community center originated by the Wisconsin Annual Conference of the General Board of Global Ministries in 1961. We received our 501(c)3 status in 1962. We target our services to the 53212 and surrounding zip code neighborhoods. In addition, Northcott also serves the areas surrounding its Head Start and MPS Community Learning Center sites. As a long-time community agency, Northcott has become a citywide institution with an older and wider spread alumni generation now sending their children to Northcott programs they once attended.

Programs and Activities

  • Youth Programs – We provide after school and summer programs for teens and pre-teens that serve approximately 3,000 youth annually on site and at two Community Learning Centers (Keefe Avenue School and Greenfield School). While emphasizing skill development and community participation, we offer educational enhancement and leadership development options, sports, arts, ATODA and other prevention training, and community involvement activities.
  • Three Head Start Centers – Currently we serve 295 children and their families at three sites (Northcott Neighborhood House – 2460 N. 6th Street, Fond du Lac Center –3601 W. Fond du Lac, and the Lisbon Center -- 3711 W. Lisbon Avenue). Read more about our Head Start Centers.
  • Fresh Start/Milwaukee Builds—Northcott has become a major center of job training for the construction trades with our young adult oriented Fresh Start and our adult Milwaukee Builds programs. These programs provide job training, educational enhancement, and actual construction experience.
  • Neighborhood Development –In addition to our major home building efforts, our agency has a long history of work with neighborhood organizations in many joint projects and collaborations. Our Juneteenth Day Celebration is nationally recognized as one of the longest continual celebrations of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Our Annual Vigil against Violence that dedicates itself to eliminating neighborhood homicides is also a major community event.
  • Emergency Services/Health – These services include a food pantry, a commodities program, a clothing bank, and information/referral services. We also sponsor health fairs that provide residents with health information and screenings.
